Bloomberg News

The recent spike in stock market volatility has put the financial advice community into scramble mode, with a lot of advisers fielding calls from nervous clients while simultaneously embracing defensive investment strategies.

“I'm telling my clients, first of all, we saw the potential for this kind of market pullback and that's why they already have a hedge in [their] portfolio. I'm also telling them if we get to a fork in the road, we're taking the more conservative path,” said Robert Isbitts, founder and chief investment strategist at Sungarden Investment Research.

With the Dow Jones Industrial Average down nearly 7% from the start of the year following a stretch of eight down trading days over the past two weeks, Mr. Isbitts is preparing clients for a downturn of between 10% and 20%.

To tell the truth, I had almost forgotten about Sutor Technology Group Ltd. (NASDAQ:SUTR) after posting my "right stock, wrong time" speech back on the 9th. While I loved the way SUTR had broken past a horizontal ceiling at $1.83 after several weeks' worth of trying, the bullish move itself was a little overheated and looked like it was setting up a near-term pullback. Only after that dip would the stock be a healthy buy again.

Companies can make brilliant moves, but there are also times when things don't work out quite as planned. From an ill-conceived entry into the crowded tablet market to the leading online retailer jacking up its minimum order size for free shipping, here's a rundown of the week's best and worst moves in the business world. Zynga (ZNGA) -- Winner Zynga has a long way to go to regain its former status as a market darling, but the casual and social gaming giant is doing its best to claw its way back. Zynga turned heads by posting a narrower loss than analysts were forecasting on Thursday night. Zynga also announced that it was hiring a former marketing manager from Electronic Arts (EA) to help beef up the presence of its mobile games. Bookings have fallen sharply at Zynga, but investors may rediscover the once hot stock with London-based King -- the company behind the wildly popular Candy Crush Saga -- getting ready to go public. Tablet Tuesday -- Loser It was supposed to be a great day for tablets. Tuesday treated gadget buffs to Nokia (NOK) announcing its first tablet, Microsoft (MSFT) starting to sell its Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets, and Apple (AAPL) unveiling its latest line of iPads. The morning kicked off with Nokia introducing a Lumia-branded tablet. The problem is that it runs Windows RT, the operating system that's so unpopular that Microsoft took a $900 million inventory charge earlier this year to write off the weak-selling Surface RT. Then came Microsoft tablets arriving at retailers, including the Surface 2 that happens to run, yes, on Windows RT. Apple's event went far better, but the stock sold off after the presentation. One concern is that the new iPad mini is getting an increase in price. Apple has never boosted the price of next-gen iPads, but now it's doing so with the smaller iPad mini. That may not go over so well in a market where competing tablets have only gotten cheaper over time. IMAX (IMAX) -- Winner They say that the

Advisors' Opinion:

Right out of the gate, Abbott found some success, getting FDA approval for its XIENCE Xpedition drug-eluting stent. The stent market could prove increasingly important for Abbott going forward, as its Absorb line of products moves through clinical trials. Boston Scientific (NYSE: BSX  ) has a competing product, its Synergy line, which looks like the only potential roadblock for Abbott to capture first-mover status in bioresorbable stents.

Boston Scientific (NYSE: BSX  ) found itself as another notable decliner today, with shares slipping 2%. Health-care stocks were, as a sector, the worst performers in the entire market today, so shareholders can cite that as a major culprit behind today's fall. A more important catalyst behind today's move, however, might simply be the business itself. Though the stock has sported 58% gains so far this year, those outsized returns are a little befuddling, considering the medical device company lost $4 billion last year.

Tapping the full potential of that abundance is expensive and hinges on various logistic projects — like approving TransCanada (TRP)Keystone XL pipeline. But analysts at the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimate that the opportunity is just too big for Canada to ignore, and that oil sands production will surge to a staggering 5.7 million barrels per day by 2030. This jump in production will make Canada the fourth-fastest growing oil player on the planet.
